On February 7, 2007, thousands gathered at the Texas State Capitol in Austin to advocate for increased educational choices for parents. The rally, organized by the National Coalition of Latino Clergy & Christian Leaders (CONLAMIC), saw Hispanic ministers, church members, and community leaders traveling from cities like McAllen, Harlingen, Edinburg, Houston, Pasadena, and Dallas to participate. Reverend Miguel Rivera, CONLAMIC’s president, emphasized the moral imperative of providing broader educational opportunities, particularly through urban school choice programs.
The event featured speeches from various leaders, including Dr. Howard Fuller of the Black Alliance for Educational Options and Pastor J.R. Rodriguez of CONLAMIC-Texas. Rebeca Nieves Huffman, President and CEO of the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options, highlighted the collaboration with CONLAMIC in mobilizing the Hispanic evangelical community. The rally underscored the pressing need to address high dropout rates among Hispanic students in Texas, advocating for educational reforms to ensure better futures for these children.
