Rivera argued that participating in the census could lead to the misuse of demographic data to promote anti-immigrant legislation. He emphasized the need to protect undocumented community members, stating, “We take care of our brethren.” CHRISTIANITY TODAY However, this stance faced opposition from other Hispanic evangelical organizations. Leaders like Luis Cortes Jr. of Esperanza and Jesse Miranda of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference advocated for full participation in the census, highlighting its importance in the equitable distribution of federal aid to Latino communities. They viewed census participation as a civic duty and a means to ensure proper representation and resources for their communities.
