In mid-June, approximately 200 U.S. Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines began guarding the Wilshire Federal Building in Westwood, Los Angeles, under Task Force 51 commanded by Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman. This rare deployment follows over a week of protests sparked by federal immigration raids and comes amid a larger mobilization of thousands of National Guard and Marine forces across the city.
The Marines are focused solely on protecting federal facilities and personnel—not engaging in civilian law enforcement—even as legal debates intensify over Posse Comitatus restrictions and California officials challenge the federal action in court. Some federal troops have even detained a civilian near the building, marking one of the rare direct interactions between active-duty military and U.S. citizens
